Historically Inspired Illuminations

Yea! I shall drink from Thee
And Thou shalt drink from me
All the good God has preserved in us.
Blessed is he who is so firmly established here
That he may never spill out
What God has poured into him.
       -Mechthild de Magdenburg (1207-1297)

Joining the long tradition of artists copying masters to learn, I spent a number of years learning the styles and techniques of medieval painting. These images are illuminations, but I also worked in egg tempera both in and out of the Byzantine Icon tradition. You can find the results of this process on my Contemporary Illuminations page

Like my more contemporary illuminations, these pieces are created using handmade materials from medieval recipes whose processes are deeply linked to spiritual symbolism.  The pieces are painted on animal skin parchment, painted with handmade paints from stones such as azurite & malachite, plants like indigo & madder & different colored earths and metals, use 22k gold leaf. For more on the symbolism of the materials, check my blog post on Finding the Sacred in Contemporary Art and my forthcoming book Lapis & Gold: Unlocking the Secrets of Medieval Painters & Illuminators.
