Illuminations
If in your heart you make
a manger for his birth,
then God will once again
become a child on earth.
-Angelus Silesius (1624 - 1677)
These pieces are created
using handmade materials from medieval recipes whose
processes are deeply linked to spiritual symbolism.
The pieces are, for the most part, painted on animal
skin parchment which, for the medieval artist,
represented the body and the painting the soul.
I made many of these paints myself from stones such as
azurite & malachite, plants like indigo & madder &
different colored earths and metals. Making these
materials into paint is a spiritual process in itself.
For instance, grinding the deep blue azurite stones into
pigment is a meditative process which helps me to clear
my mind and enter fully into the creative process.
22k gold leaf, which is
applied to a raised bed of gesso, is also used. This gesso is likened
to the clay from which the Divine formed Adam the first
man. For more on the meaning of this process see:

forthcoming book Lapis
& Gold: Unlocking the Secrets of Medieval
Illuminators.
